Josh Cavallo – football’s first openly-gay male player – has taken to social media to announce the happy news of his engagement, posting a pic of himself on one knee as he proposed
Australian footballer Josh Cavallo has taken to social media to share the joyous news of his engagement to partner, Leighton Morrell. The announcement, made at Adelaide United’s Copper Stadium, marks a significant milestone in Cavallo’s journey as both an athlete and an advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights.
Josh took to social media announce the happy news, posting a pic of himself on one knee. Alongside the snap he wrote: “Starting this year with my fiancée,
“Thank you @adelaideunited for helping set up this surprise.
“You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible. To share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started”.
At just 24 years old, Josh made headlines worldwide in 2021 by courageously becoming the first professional footballer to come out as gay, sparking an outpouring of support from the global football community.
At the time, the midfielder said he had been “hiding who I truly am” but was “finally comfortable” to speak out about his sexuality.
“There’s something personal that I need to share with everyone. I am a footballer and I am gay,” he explained in a clip shared to the team’s social media.
The post was accompanied by heartwarming photos capturing Morrell’s delighted reaction and the couple holding hands, with Morrell proudly displaying his brand new ring.
His team showed instant support for the happy couple, posting a red love heart below the post as hundreds of fans also shared their joy and excitement over the news.
“Heck yes, Joshua!” one wrote. “Congratulations to the both of you and huge cred to the club for helping with the surprise of a lifetime.”
Another added: “Gorgeous ring!! Congratulations to you both.”
“Congratulations Josh!” a third said. “How exciting that it was done in a place where you had been so comfortable in your own skin! Congrats to you both.”
However, Josh’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. As a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights in football, he has faced vile abuse on social media. Addressing this issue, Josh bravely opened up about the hurtful messages he has received, emphasizing the importance of continuing the fight for equality.
“I share my life via this social media platform to help individuals grow around the world,” he wrote. “To feel empowered in their own skin. To be comfortable with the person they wish to be.”
Reflecting on the progress made since his coming out journey two years ago, Josh highlighted the ongoing work needed to combat discrimination and hatred in the world of sports and beyond. He stressed the harmful impact of such behavior and called for continued efforts to create a more inclusive and accepting environment for all.
